Mama moves out with the girls to an apartment that is close to the Woolworth's store. The apartment is very small, and Mama leaves almost everything behind. Bone blames herself for their having to live like this now. She replays the past few days in her mind, telling herself she deserved the beating and wondering how she could have done a better job of keeping it hidden. Raylene tells Bone that it will take Mama some time to forgive herself, and Bone wonders why because Mama hadn't done anything wrong. Bone is the one who makes Glen crazy. Mama refuses to talk to Glen, and she applies for a job at the mill, even though she hates the mill. She keeps telling the girls everything will be all right. They all sleep in.....
