Mama returns to Glen only two weeks later. He begged her in front of the family and swore he would never beat Bone again. He cried, and Mama forgave him. Bone knows that he will be good for a while, but after a time it will start again. Mama informs Bone that Aunt Ruth's health is failing, and she tells Bone to go stay with Ruth and Uncle Travis for the summer. Ruth does not look well when Bone arrives, which is a surprise to Bone.
