Chapter 7 Summary

Cousin Grey is caught stealing, and Mama tells Bone that she had better not ever catch Bone stealing. Bone's plan is to not be caught, but when Mama asks where she got some Tootsie Rolls for herself and Reese, Mama takes Bone downtown to the Woolworth's store where she stole them. Before this, Mama asks Bone if she remembers her cousin Tommy Lee, Aunt Ruth's oldest. Tommy Lee used to steal candy and give it away, hoping that people would like him. He later ended up stealing from everyone he knew. Mama says that Bone is all she has and all she will ever have, and Mama won't let Bone end up like Tommy Lee. Bone feels ashamed, and she listens as Mama tells her a story about being honest.
