Rudi begins the novel with much un-harnessed talent but not much experience. He does not fear heights and genuinely wants to learn more. His lessons are taught to him in many ways. Rudi learns an early lesson when he strands himself while climbing with his uncle and the captain. His lack of patience causes the rest of the group to be put at risk. He is embarrassed that he needs to be rescued, and unfortunately it is all the ammunition his uncle needs to keep him from climbing. Teo rescues Rudi's ego, though, and shows him how to climb in a group - as a true guide. Rudi is forced to learn to listen and be patient. He knows that the more experienced climbers do things for a reason, and he often has.....
