Chapter 6, Master and Pupil Summary

The weather turns bad, and the mountains become enshrouded in fog. Captain Winter leaves for several days and asks Franz to reconsider being his guide for a Citadel expedition. Rudi doesn't understand, but Franz has told no one what happened on the mountain. For that, Rudi is glad, but it is small consolation. He is back at work, and the dirty dishes seem to never stop coming. Franz considers him "back where he belongs." Rudi's mother has him take his climbing equipment, which has only been used once, to Uncle Franz to sell, since they won't be used again.

Rudi feels miserable after the third day of rain and tells Teo about what he did on the mountain. The cook agrees that it was a bad thing to do and speaks of youthful impatience. Rudi goes back...
