Dagny's apartment is the same as when she left. She showers to wash off the feel of her office. Her decision to return has brought pain, not joy, and she has abandoned her dream of finding the man who is her equal. Francisco comes to her apartment. His face is open and unmasked, and she knows that she deserted him. He asks if she can talk about it. He looks at her impassive manner and sees ashes where pain would have meant sensation. She asks him to sit while she remains standing. Francisco suggests that there is a future when the looters will perish, but they, the industrialists, will not. Dagny wants to perish with her railroad. She will continue to run it to maintain herself. Francisco tells her that she will stop when she finally discovers that her work is being used by faceless men to destroy intelligence. He...
