Part 2, Chapter 8 "By Our Love" Summary

On the morning of May 28th, Dagny is enjoying the solitude of her cabin, where she cooks her meals on a wood-burning stove and gathers wood on the hillsides. She has repaired and repainted the cabin, built a stone walk to the road and planted flowers. She lacks purpose. She buys supplies at a store in Woodstock, twenty miles away. At night, she remembers repairs needed by the railroad and longs for Hank. Dagny is deliberately waiting to see him until she no longer wants to work at the railroad. She thinks of Quentin Daniels and the motor, her only hope for the future.

Francisco arrives, whistling the theme of Halley's Fifth Concerto as he climbs the hill. They greet each other with their childhood nicknames, "Slug" and "Frisco.".....
