Eddie is in the cafeteria talking to his friend. He is concerned that his friend might have gone because so many others have. Human "driftwood" is filling their places. Eddie keeps working because he expects Dagny to return. James is scared that the Board and Washington will find out that Dagny is gone. James has a friend doing her job, one who makes sure he is not caught giving an order or making a decision. Dagny's replacement always blames someone else for his mistakes. Eddie says he almost quit last week. Chick Morrison from Washington was on a morale building speaking tour of the whole country.
