Part 2, Chapter 3 "White Blackmail" Summary
Lillian returns home from Hank's hotel suite. Hank rides with her in a cab to the train station and continues to Dagny's apartment. Dagny is in bed, not asleep. He caresses her forehead protectively. They discuss their situation. She explains that he owes her nothing. She knew he was married and chose to have an affair. He again asks her to name her first lover. She refuses and responds that his only real guilt is that he has never learned to enjoy himself and is willing to bear too much. Hank says that Francisco told him that too. Hank would entrust his life to Francisco. Dagny cannot decide whether Francisco is the greatest or the lowest man on earth. Hank explains that Francisco gives him hope because he and Dagny are the only people not made of pain. The stock of d'Anconia Copper crashes the next morning, September 3.
