Chapters 91-100 Summary
Langdon and Vittoria dash towards the burning church and find the door locked. Vittoria fires three shots into the ancient bolt, and it shatters. They throw open the door. Wooden pews are stacked high and ablaze in a sort of funeral pyre. High overhead, two cables suspend a naked man. Each wrist has been tied to an opposing cable, and the man is being held spread-eagle over the flames. Langdon stares and realizes that the old man is still alive. He also has a scorched brand on his chest.
Langdon shoots into motion, dashing down the main aisle. The fire is too hot for him to get close. He sees that the cables are strung through pulleys before descending to metal cleats on each side of the church. He thinks that if he can loosen one of them, the man might swing clear of the fire.
