Frank

Frank is one of the central characters in the story. He starts out as a young and inexperienced lawyer and, by teaming up with Alan, becomes incredibly wealthy and successful. Frank is a perpetual bachelor who sleeps with a number of women but never commits to a relationship. Frank is used to his comfortable lifestyle and looks down on those whom he considers beneath him. In Italy, Frank starts a sexual relationship with a young schoolgirl and encourages Alan to do the same.

Alan

Alan is Frank's best friend and partner. He is from Cleveland, but went to college with Frank at a school in Pennsylvania. Alan, like Frank, has grown accustomed to a comfortable lifestyle due to his family's wealth. Alan is married in the story with a two-year-old daughter, but he eventually gets divorced. Alan envies Frank's bachelor life, but is more introspective about the world...
