Summary

In Chapter 1, narrated by Nina, Nina and her husband Kirk attended a gala at the Hermitage Hotel. She thought of the way that since Kirk had sold his software company and they had become very wealthy that they had grown apart from each other. They had just learned that their son, Finch, had been accepted to Princeton. Nina believed it was the result of good parenting.

Nina reminded Kirk they were being honored at this particular gala for their work in suicide prevention and awareness. Kirk pretended not to know what she was talking about but then relented and said he was ready for the speech.

After the speech, Nina told Kirk his words were perfect. She did not know that at that moment Finch was making one of the worst decisions of his life.
