Mari

Mari is a nineteen year old college student. She is studying to become a Chinese translator. When she was a child, she was severely bullied at school. It was so bad that she refused to go back to school until her parents allowed her to go to a Chinese school that was less competitive and friendlier. She prefers to speak in Chinese rather than Japanese, and is going to study abroad in Beijing for six months. She feels a strange affinity for the prostitute who she translates for.

She has always considered herself the ugly sister, in part because her parents told her she was ugly. Her sister Eri is beautiful and popular, and Mari always felt inferior to her sister.
