Summary

The novel opens in London when the unnamed protagonist receives a phone call from her mother-in-law, Isabella. Isabella is the mother of the protagonist’s husband, Christopher. The protagonist (who is a professional translator) and Christopher had separated six months earlier, although they had not told Christopher’s parents. On the phone, Isabella tells the protagonist that she cannot get in touch with Christopher. Isabella says that Christopher told her he would be going to Greece to do research for his next book. Isabella asks the protagonist to go to Greece and look for him. The protagonist agrees, and Isabella gives her the name of the hotel where Christopher checked in.
