Summary

The novel opens in London when the unnamed protagonist receives a phone call from her mother-in-law, Isabella. Isabella is the mother of the protagonist’s husband, Christopher. The protagonist (who is a professional translator) and Christopher had separated six months earlier, although they had not told Christopher’s parents.
