All-black eye

An all-black eye is the mark of an Antari magician. Kell has an all-black eye. It denotes his nature as an Antari in physical terms.To many other citizens of Red London, the black eye is symbolic of power evil an fear. Therefore, Kell is feared rather than loved. Kell resents not being normal, and the eye is a constant reminder of how he stands out rather than fits in.

Holland's reappearance

Holland’s reappearance is an omen of evil. When Holland suddenly appears in the novel, alive rather than dead, readers are rightly confused. It becomes apparent that Holland could not have been brought back to life without cause or evil. It soon becomes clear that Holland is possessed by Osaron -a demonic spirit synonymous with evil. Holland is the manifestation of evil, and his reappearance means evil is coming for Red London.
