This is the main character, a puppy born to a feral mother who lives with her puppies in a den among the roots of a large tree by a creek. Toby has three siblings named Fast, Sister, and Hungry. Fast and Sister play together a lot. Hungry is always hungry and sleepy. Toby tries to catch a frog and that is one of his first adventures. Toby's mother tries to teach her puppies to fear humans and evade cars and trucks, but one day a truck comes and men capture all the dogs except Sister and take them to a white-haired woman, Senora, who loves the puppies.
