Chapters 1 - 4 Summary

This is the beginning of a book about a dog who goes through four reincarnations. These four chapters deal with the first lifetime of the main character, Toby. He is a mutt with three siblings and a feral mother.

The first impression Toby has is of the fuzzy bodies of his three siblings and the wonderful, long tongue of his mother. His siblings' names are Fast, Sister ,and Hungry. They live in a den under a large tree growing on a creek bank. Mother tries to teach them to fear humans. There is a culvert under the road near the den and they find dead birds there. Mother evades cars and trucks.

One day a truck drives slowly up and down the road as if searching for them. Mother and puppies run into the culvert. Men appear at both ends...
