Daisy Hernández is the author of the memoir, which recounts her coming of age from early childhood through young adulthood. She is a bisexual Latina woman, and much of the book revolves around discussions of these aspects of her identity and how they have affected her life and relationships with her family. Hernández grew up in a household where the importance of family was strongly emphasized. In addition to her parents and sister (who is only mentioned in passing throughout the memoir), Hernández was very close with her aunts, her mother's three sisters.
