Summary

Fayre tries to learn how to read. While in the study, she finds a massive mural depicting all the land and images of the war between faeries and humans. Tamlin offers to teach her to read, but she refuses coldly. Deciding she must learn more, Fayre discreetly asks Lucien how to catch a Suriel, a faerie who is required to answer all questions honestly. Lucien promises – in a roundabout, non-committal way – that he will be hunting nearby and can help. Neither of them tell Tamlin their plan.

With Lucien’s advice, Fayre sets a trap and manages to ensnare a Suriel. She is surprised by its hideous appearance and fights off the urge to run. Fayre asks if she can leave and the Suriel tells her she and her family will die if she leaves. Fayre also learns that Tamlin is a...
