Chapters 26 - 29 Summary

Abe finally gets home and sleeps. Rita wakes him up for dinner. After dinner, a family meeting is called. The older boys do not want to go on a camping trip that was previously planned and instead they want to join other friends who are going elsewhere. Left behind, Orel does not want to go if it is just him and his father either. A vote is taken, and despite making prior reservations, Abe loses. He falls into bed exhausted. He is shaken awake a few hours later by Isaac who tells him that there is a phone emergency. Abe picks it up to discover that District Attorney Chris Locke has been shot and killed in his car. Senator Wager, in the car with him, is in shock but unharmed. Abe has to go, and would prefer that his three boys...
