The Once and Future King

Born to English parents in Bombay, India, in 1906, Terence Hanbury White came to England in 1915 at the height of World War 1. Throughout the early years of his life, Europe was in a constant state of flux. A communist government came to power in Russia, while fascist sentiments grew in Italy, Spain, and Germany. Underlying the plot in The Once and Future King is a discussion of politics and values that can be traced to these events.

Events in History at the Time the Novel Takes Place

The historical King Arthur. Populated with magicians, knights, crusades, and damsels in distress, legends of King Arthur have fascinated the Western world for many centuries. There is, despite this continuing popularity, no proof of a historical King Arthur, but tantalizing clues to his possible existence reach back into the dim past.

Arthur is generally imagined to have lived in the fifth or early sixth century, an era of turmoil for Britain. The Roman Empire, which had invaded the British Isles and governed its native Celtic peoples since the first century B.c.., suddenly pulled its troops out of Britain.
