She later had to be committed to an asylum. The pressure of Pirandellos personal and business woes resulted in a period of intense creativity between 1915 and 1922, during which he produced some of the works for which he is now most famous, such as the dramas Henry IV (Enrico IV) and Six Characters in Search of an Author (Sei personaggi in cerca dautore). The latter premiered in 1921, startled its audiences with its unique handling of the themes of theatrical illusion and reality, and won Pirandello both notoriety and acclaim. To this day, Six Characters in Search of an Author is considered a watershed in modern drama. The following year, the success of Pirandellos Henry IV consolidated his reputation as one of Italys foremost playwrights; he would go on to win global acclaim when he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934.
