Jesuit priests and peace activists
Daniel and Philip Berrigan were both ordained as Jesuit priests in the 1950s. They became adherents of a secular (worldly) religious philosophy that promotes the improvement of the human condition, or the creation of a “heaven” here on Earth. Daniel and Philip Berrigan came into the public eye in 1967 and 1968, when they were arrested and served time in prison for dramatic protests against the Vietnam War (1954–75). The brothers’ involvement in peace and justice issues has been unfailing, from their civil rights and anti-Vietnam war activism of the 1960s and 1970s to their antinuclear weapons activism of the 1980s and 1990s.
Daniel and Philip Berrigan were born in northern Minnesota: Daniel on May 9, 1921, in the town of Virginia; and Philip on October 5, 1923, in the town of Two Harbors. They were the youngest of six sons, and two of three siblings to enter the priesthood. The Berrigans’ father, Thomas Berrigan, was a union activist and a socialist (one who believes that the means of production should not be controlled by owners, but by the community as a whole).
