What is the difference between a ratite bird and a bird with a carina?

A ratite bird (ostriches and Emus for example) do not have a carina or a keel (breast plate). A bird with a carina is capable of flight because it allows huge flight muscles to be solidly attached to a reinforced breast plate for the additional stresses of flight.
