Black holes are where ordinary gravity has become so extreme that it takes over evertyhing (and all other forces) that come near it. Nothing can escape a black hole's gravity....not even light. It is formed by the complete collaspe of the core of a massive star. The nearest one to Earth is many lightyears away.
