bacteria and the archaea are the two kingdoms of prokaryote. The bacteria have a wide variety of sizes and shapes and can be found in most habitats on the planet. The bacteria cell is surrounded by a lipid membrane, and lack true nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, or the golgi appartus or endoplasmic reticulum. Bacteria contain ribosomes for the production of proteins, but the structure of the bacterial ribosome is different which makes it easier for it to infiltrate a host. Archaea have additional shapes that are not found in bacteria and archaea possess genes and several metabolic pathways that are more closely related to those of eukaryotes. They are highly adaptable to their environments and can utilize multiple energy sources to sustain themselves.
