Rhino poaching does not make the evening news, but it is still an ongoing and serious problem in Africa. According to a DEA progress report on Rhino Oaching in November 2012 668 rhinos were killed for their horn. This is an increase of more than 200 more animals poached. Each year, according to the report, the number jumps by 1-200. Since the start of the poaching epidemic in 2008 South Africa has lost over 1600 rhinos. Part of the reason that it is still happening is because there is still a large demand for a rhino's horn, and the demand increases every year. Another reason is that it is so widespread and the law enforcement put in place cannot cover all of teh square acreage necessary. Lastly, some of the officials in charge of protecting the rhinos may actually be allowing the poaching due to corruption among law enforcement officials. Potential solutions include a tighter sanction against anyone buying or selling rhino horns, even in powdered form; making even possesion of it against global law. Secondly, the UN should become involved, sending additional law enforcement to the area.
