What are mechanical waves?

The mechanical wave cannot transmit its energy through a vacumn because it has to have a medium in order to transport its energy from one place to another. A sound wave is a mechanical wave because sound can't travel in a vacuum (the vacuum of space..if you scream, no one will hear you).
