When sunlight encounters heavy concentrations of particles in the atmosphere, the shorter wavelengths of light (violet and blue) are scattered away leaving only the longer wavelengths to be visible (red, yellow, orange). The more particulate matter the sun encounters the redder the sunset and sunrise. In the event of a volcanic eruption it is conceivable that there would be so much particles in the air as to make the sky very red.
