Potassium nitrate

Potassium nitrate...in the garage where I park my car, there is potassium nitrate dripping from the ceiling. If I cover my car with a tarp, will that protect my car? Is there a danger?

Potassium nitrate, especially if it is dripping through the roof onto the car, should be dilute enough not to damage the car. If you use a tarp you should be completely fine. Potassium nitrate is generally used in fertilizer, which is probably where this is coming from. That means that it is not concentrated to any extent to begin with. Secondly, using a tarp will provide an additional barrier. If it were to drop repeatedly on the same unprotected spot on your car, over time the paint would begin to show signs of damage and oxidation. Basically, it is a type of salt (though in certain concentrations it is one of the ingredients of gunpowder).
