A proton gradient is the driving force behind ATP conversion and creation. It is also an intermediary power source for heat and flagellete rotation. What causes this proton gradient is a very high concentration of protons outside the inner membrane of the mitochondria than inside the membrane, thus creating an imbalance that drives atp synthesis/hydrolysis.
