A really good example of how the buoyant force works in comparison to the direction of the force of gravity is to think how it feels to be in a swimming pool. Everything is 'lighter' in water. This is because the buoyant force acts in teh upward direction, against the force of gravity, which makes the object feel lighter in the water than it would on land.
