No, Valmiki was not an untouchable. He was a Brahmin as given out in Valmiki Ramayana. Valmiki was the son of Parcheta who was son of Varun. Actually Valmiki has been forced on the Bhangis (Scavengers) as their Dharam Guru and Ramayana as their religilous book. It was done to check conversion of Chuhras (Bhangis) of Punjab to Christianity and Islam. They were aslo advised to add Balmiki or Valmiki to thier names. It was done through a book titled "Balmiki Parkash" written by Pt. Amichand Sahrma , a Brahmin of Hoshiarpur (Punjab). Hindus also spent a lot of funds to propogate this falsehood. They wanted to increase their numbers to get share in the Assemblies during transfer of power by the British.
