the term "rainmaker" was, as you probably supposed, defined quite literally: a person who claimed they could make it rain. Grisham uses it to define a person capable of making a lot of money, mostly one's employer, but as the book progresses, we discover who actually gets the deluge and who gets left to bake in the sun.
