Question: Other

Do you see a correlation between the main characters in Fried Green Tomatoes and the book of Ruth from the Bible?

They are both love stories and two of the main characters share the same name, Ruth. Did the author do that on purpose? What characteristics, similarities, meanings or issues do you notice in both selections.

I believe that there are a lot of similarities between Ruth in the Bible and the Ruth in the story.  In Ruth in the Bible, she was married to a man who died.  She stayed with

the mother-in-law and lived a life of poverty, gleaning fields for Boaz.  She was

quiet, humble, and beautiful.  She did not speak out.  Ruth in the story of Fried

Green Tomatoes was like Ruth of the Bible because she was beautiful, quiet, and

submissive.  She married Frank Bennett because she was betrothed to him.  He was

powerful, successful, but had a dark side.  It wasn't until Ruth married him that this

showed through.  She stays even though he beat her every day.  It wasn't till her

mother's dyeing wish was that she leaves him.  Ruth took a passage from the Bible

and sent it to Idgie to come save her.  Idigie was a different kind of woman.  She was

not in the biblical since, she was a woman that was holding a man states in a time that

women were not allowed to speak out.  Idgie was masculine.  When Buddy died a part

of Idige died with him.  Ruth was in love with Buddy; however she had to marry

Bennett.  Ruth and Idgie were seen as lesbians in this book.  They were never

together, but they lived with each other after Ruth left Frank.  They ran a business

together and then raised a child together.  Ruth was the woman in the relationship and

Idgie was the man figure.  Ruth was submissive and all people adored her.  Idige was

the rough, tumble woman, that played hard with the men, didn't hold her tongue, and

stood up for what was right.  In a time of slavery and war.  Idgie would do good deeds

as long as no one would speak of them.  She was the railway bill; she would dress up

and throw food from the trains for all the people that were starving.  I guess you could

say she was a savior to some, and a thief to others.  But she had a good heart, and

would do anything for people she loved.

I hope this answered your question.
