In The Fiddler on the Roof - Tevye could finally not "bend" any further. What is this referring to?

He could not tolerate the marriage of his 3rd daughter to a non-Jew.  He was willing to "bend" tradition when his oldest 2 daughters got married to men without the intervention of a matchmaker, but Chava's marriage (to an Orthodox Christian!) was beyond Tevye's ability to adapt. Chava was "dead to him" after that.
