Lent is the period of 40 days leading up to Easter. It is symbolic of the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his public ministry. It is designed to be a time of prayer and fasting, almsgiving and preparation for the Solemnity and Celebration of Easter. For Catholics, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and end with the three days of Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday).

40 days to JEsus Christ, public impalment on the cross at golgotha, the catholic church seeks to identify with her saviour via fasting and praying. This helps them to relive his memories as well as inspire faith on the faithfuls.Afterall,' mourn with those that mourn ,'is a biblical injunction.

Jesus went through agony as the gethsemane experience shows. He did not fast for 40 days before his crucifixion but the church simply wanted to identify with the crucifixion event in a major significant way hence the 40 days lent fasting.Jesus fasted for 40 days at the beginning of his earthly ministry when he was in the desert so it is not bad to concl;ude the ministry with another 40 days fasting by his followers even when death made it impossible for him to join us physically for the lent fast.

Lent is one of the  liturgical seasons in the Catholic Church. It is period of 40 days used for repentance and reflection. The 40 days begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter; the 6 Sundays of Lent are not counted. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of complete Fast and Abstinence; all Fridays in Lent are days of Abstinence. The "Gloria" is not recited during mass during Lent.
