What purpose was served by Jesus dying on the cross? If it was for the forgiveness of sin, was it past, present, or future sin?

Yes it was for forgiveness of past, present as well as future sins.Repentance means that we must trust God to handle what we cannot handle the cost of our transgressions while trusting ourselves to handle what we can the decision not to continue to live in sin habitually but to live a morally just life.
