The absolute value of a number may be thought of as its distance from zero.

The absolute value of a real number x is the non-negative value of x without regard to its sign.

absolute value of 265=265

the opposite of the number is the distance from zero to the negative size

opposite of 265=-265

both are 265 spaces from zero--one is positive and one is negative
