One major reason the southern states supported the acquisition of Florida from Spain was the fact that Florida supported a militia of free blacks, many who were former slaves, and all of whom were armed. The presence of armed blacks, in addition to the bands of black Seminoles, were seen as an enticement to slaves in Georgia, who wished to escape to freedom.
