Why did Britain want to tax the colonists and control colonial trade?

The main reason the British raised taxes and desired complete control over colonial trade was the immense debt they incurred during the French and Indian War. Britain exercised control over trade in order to keep the colonies dependent on their mother country for imported goods and supplies. In essence, it was all about money.
