Why are Sitting Bull or Chief Joseph important parts of US History? (what do they represent, why are they important symbols, or stories to learn from?)

Sitting Bull is remembered as a fierce warrior and great leader. He is a symbol of independence and refusal to submit, and though he accepted the treay with the U.S. government, he never allowed himself to become dependent.

Chief Joseph is another wide and beloved chief of the Native American people. He is a symbol of peace, and had the white settlers kept the treaty instead of infiltrating Native American lands looking for gold, that peace might have remained.
