What were some of the factors that began the Spanish-American War?

Various causes were at the root of the war. Spain and the United States disagreed about the the state of affairs in Cuba. Cuba wished to gain its independence to Spain, and Americans were appalled by the actions of Spanish soldiers, leading to support for the Cuban rebels.
