Many of the immigrants to the United States during this period made the journey because of famine, hardship, and lack of economic opportunities in their own countries. America was seen as a land of opportunity. Once in America, they found that opportunities were limited. Jobs were hard to find, and when jobs became avaiable, the immigrants were paid less. Immigrants also faced discrimination.
