The Magna Carta, signed by King John in the year 1215, guaranteed the right to a trial by jury, the right to be consulted before the implementation of higher taxes, the right to life and liberty, and also the right to inherit property.

In terms of the Church, the Magna Carta declared the church free from government interference.
