What factors allowed large coastal cities to develop in the Middle Colonies?

The Middle Colonies enjoyed a longer growing season, and the soil was rich enough for cash crops to flourish. Natural harbors were perfect sites for cities and allowed merchants to easily export grain and other crops grown locally, as well as to import manufactured goods from England.
