How did colonial government differ from present-day government in the United States?

One important differences between colonial democracy and our current political system is the definition of the "right to vote." Today, everyone can vote regardless of gender, race or socioeconomic class. In Colonial America, there was no single political system, and each state had its own laws regulated voting.
