Saladin was vizier of Egypt and acted in direct opposition to Nur ad-Din. Saladin refused to be submissive to Nur ad-Din, and the two prepared for war. Before the war began, Nur ad-Din fell ill and died. Saladin eventually married Nur ad-Din's widow and deposed his son, actively pursuing and accomplishing his predecessor's dream of unification under one rule.
