Santiago is old and tired. He has not caught a fish in 84 days. He is mocked by other fishermen except the boy Manolin. Santiago wants to catch one more great fish. He goes out in his small skiff. He is ill-equipped and too old for such a battle but this will be Santiago's final challenge: his last attempt at redemption from old age.
