The conflict in Ashes of Roses is one of man-vs-society. Poverty was extensive and jobs were almost impossible to find, as there were far more immigrants than available jobs. Rose had difficulty finding a job because new immgrants were known as "greenies", inexperienced. Employers also based hiring decisions on where the immigrants came from (discrimination). When she did find a job, her employer took advantage of her by leaving her unpaid. Finally, she takes a job in a shirtwaist factory where she almost loses her life.
